WTU Member Organizing Institute - Fall 2019 Application

Are you a passionate fighter for neighborhood public schools and the resources our students need to succeed? Do your colleagues look to you for inspiration and leadership during tough times? Do you enjoy encouraging others to take action and fight injustices? Are you eager to build a stronger community of like-minded DCPS educators? If you answered yes to any of these questions, WTU is looking for you!

Our union is launching its third Member Organizer Institute (MOI). Particpants of the MOI, known as "Member Organizers," are provided training and coaching while working as part-time organizers for 10 hours per week over a six-week period. Because this commitment is over and beyond typical union volunteer duties, Member Organizers receive a modest stipend.

The focus of our Fall 2019 MOI will be building grassroots power by fostering community among DCPS educators. If this sounds interesting to you, apply now!

Note: Each MOI application will be reviewed and each candidate interviewed. However, there are only 10 spots available.

The Basics

  • Member Organizers spend up to 10 hours a week performing activities related to the MOI. This work is to be performed during non-work hours, such as on weekends and evenings. All MOI work is separate from normal work duties.
  • Member organizers hold small-group meetings, home visits and one-on-one conversations in other locations to move their colleagues to action.
  • MOI participants are paid $20/hour.
  • Member Organizers will be interviewed and hired by November 8.
  • All Member Organizers must commit to attending a training on Saturday, November 9 from 10am - 5pm.
  • Member Organizers will participate in an intensive six-week effort to build grass-roots power through new member organizing and engagement.
  • The Fall 2019 MOI will run from November 12 through January 9, 2020. Member Organizers will not be required to work during the week of Thanksgiving or over the winter break.
  • Participants must hold a current driver's license, insurance, and be willing to use their own vehicle.
  • Member Organizers must have a cell phone that can make and receive calls.
