AFT Washington is excited to present the
Powerful Locals Conference
for 2024!This is a program that we offer yearly, designed to develop your local's activists and leadership skills. It is a great opportunity to grow your local's power and network.
Powerful Locals will be in person this year and take place on the campus of Pacific Lutheran University located at 12180 Park Ave. S, Tacoma, WA 98447
. Our two
core tracks
are:
Bargaining For The Win
Get set for success at the bargaining table! This training covers contract bargaining topics, including communicating with the field, strategy at the table, and working with your local membership to have real power. The training emphasizes leader identification and leader development, as well as the combo of communication, fieldwork, and outreach to enable your bargaining team to get the win.
Putting The Pieces Together: Engaging Your Local’s Membership
Your local is a powerful resource, and the more members engage, the stronger it is. This training covers ways to increase membership and member engagement, through tools including the organizing conversation and power-mapping, all the way through assessing results and leader identification – all pieces that make a strong, engaged, powerful local.

Building An Effective Board
(Wednesday and Thursday)An effective board is a board that has been thoughtfully built, but there’s no one pattern to get to success. This workshop will talk about ways to build a board and possible criteria. It draws on the experiences of AFT Washington locals that built effective board structures to achieve wins, handle problems, and build membership.
Our Power Is Our Voice: Political and Legislative Engagement
(Wednesday and Thursday)The 2025 biennium is an opportunity for the state to make real, needed investments in education. From a respectful wage for school-related personnel to a COLA for retirees and pro staff both to pay equity for adjunct faculty (and so much more), AFT Washington is planning on an ambitious legislative session, and it’s crucial that we dive in!
New Employees: Member Drives and Orientation
(Wednesday and Thursday)Reaching new employees at orientation is critical. It builds trust and visibility for the union by introducing ourselves and our work, so that new members can sign up right away and the union culture can thrive in our workplaces. For established employees, running an effective membership drive is a crucial way to reach them and ask that one crucial question – “will you join the union?”
AI In The Workplace: Mitigating Harm and Maximizing Opportunity
(Wednesday only)Artificial Intelligence has arrived! It is rapidly developing and the implications for our work lives are significant. Whether bargaining its impact on our working conditions, learning how to use it as a tool in our work, or guarding against its misuse, it is essential that we increase our knowledge so we can determine and manage its presence in our lives. This workshop will address a variety of ways union leaders can mitigate the harm and maximize the opportunities presented by AI.
Effective Communications
(Thursday only)A strong understanding of communications tools and best practices are one of the keys to a powerful local. Knowing what tools you have available to you – and the tools that get the best results for your local! – makes a big differences. This training covers how to select tools that suit your message, setting up and sustaining outreach, and the changing face of social media, as well as other digital tools that can help your local communicate with members.
