2024 Living the Legacy Awards

The AFT Women’s Rights Committee instituted the biennial Living the Legacy Awards 24 years ago as part of the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the women’s rights movement in the United States. These awards serve as an ongoing recognition of the accomplishments and contributions of female members and leaders who have been reformers, risk takers and role models in the AFT. The awards honor these women, who have made a difference for children, families and communities in the teachers union movement, in the larger labor union movement and in their community-based organizations. It is meant to recognize outstanding leaders who have worked hard in their unions and their communities.

AFT locals may nominate women members who have:

  • provided leadership and demonstrated activism in issues concerning women’s rights;
  • maintained multiple decades of involvement in local, state and national AFT affiliates;
  • worked in the trade union movement on social justice issues;
  • acted as mentors, coaches and role models for other women; and/or
  • been recognized as leaders in their own communities.

The awards, based on years of service, include:

50 years or more of service—Diamond Recognition (pin, mounted certificate)
40 years or more of service—Gold Recognition (pin, mounted certificate)
30 years or more of service—Silver Recognition (pin, mounted certificate)
