Managing Behavior In the School Community Is the school year progressing at the pace you were expecting? Have you and your students hit your stride, or have there been false starts and re-dos? Has academic instruction been disrupted by the behavior of a small number of students? For a growing number of students, behavior is the only way in which they can communicate their needs. Managing Behavior in the School Community (formerly called Managing Difficult Students) is a series of workshops designed to aid educators in understanding behaviors that disrupt classrooms and to share strategies that promote learning. Practical applications of research-based strategies to address the full continuum of behavioral interventions and/or supports will be presented. Defining behavior, effective classroom management, using instruction to manage behavior, social competence, and behavior enhancement/reduction techniques will be explored and discussed. Strategies to de-escalate extreme acting-out behaviors and to address bullying are also subtopics of our Managing Behavior workshops. Each workshop will provide a variety of strategies, but in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of all behaviors and a full repertoire of strategies, plan to attend all five weeks of the Managing Behaviors in the School Community series.
