Faculty for the Future: A Forum
Hilton Seattle Airport & Conference Center
17620 International Blvd, Seattle, WA 98188
8:30am - 4:30pm
Registration fee: $30 (plus parking costs at the Hilton)
This forum is the first step on creating a dialogue among Washington State faculty on how we see our profession evolving in the next twenty years. In the state, the nation, and internationally, represenatatives of agencies and institutions are planning for the future of higher education and workforce training. Absent from most of those discussions: faculty.
Many of the change agents insist that the role of faculty has and must continue to change. They define faculty as disseminators of information and say we must become facilitators of learning. But our experience is that few faculty today see their role as only imparting knowledge to students.
Some questions that will be discussed are:
- How do practicing faculty describe their roles?
- How can we insure that others describe our work as it is and not as how they think it is?
- How do we desccribe the core values that guide us and that we think should be preserved no matter what changes in technology and our institution come our way?
- What are the core teaching methods that should be preserved and expanded across disciplines and teaching platforms?
- How can faculty work together, two-year and four-year, full-time and part-time, tenured and non-tenured, workforce and academic, teachers, librarians and couselors, to ensure that our profession remains a viable career for those who come after us and doesn't become a piece-work trade?
